This week's TTT topic is...

Top ten favourite graphic novels/comics or comics on my TBR

I'm not much of a comic book reader (despite being heavily obsessed with the movies and shows) or a graphic novel reader. So I've decided to do a bit of both: graphic novels/comics I have read and those I plan to read someday!

Note: I will be including some manga too!

READ

♩ Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan & Takahiro Arai
♩ American Born Chinese by Gene Leun Yang
♩ The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

The last book had pictures. I'm counting it.

♩ Saga by Brian K. Vaughn & Fiona Staples
♩ Heart in a Box by Kelly Thompson & Meredith McClaren
♩ Adulthood is a Myth by Sarah Anderson

TBR

♩ Justice League, Volume 1: Origin by Geoff Johns et al.
♩ Spider-Gwen, Vol. 1: Greater Power by Jason Latour et al.
♩ Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson & Adrian Alphona

♩ Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
♩ Deadly Class, Vol. 1: Reagan Youth by Rick Remender, Wes Craig, & Lee Loughridge

Actually, a lot of this were recommendations from a good friend of mine. I really hope to get to them soon!

Have you guys read any good comic books, graphic novels, or manga?

How GORGEOUS is that cover?!

From Netgalley

♩ Passing Strange by Ellen Klages

Thank you to Tor!

♩ There's Something about Nik by Sara Hantz

Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton
Rebel of the Sands, book 2
Published March 7, 2017 by Viking Books for Young Readers (US)
e-ARC provided by Edelweiss
Add it on GoodReads!

The sizzling, un-put-downable sequel to the bestselling Rebel of the Sands!

Mere months ago, gunslinger Amani al'Hiza fled her dead-end hometown on the back of a mythical horse with the mysterious foreigner Jin, seeking only her own freedom. Now she's fighting to liberate the entire desert nation of Miraji from a bloodthirsty sultan who slew his own father to capture the throne.

When Amani finds herself thrust into the epicenter of the regime—the Sultan's palace—she's determined to bring the tyrant down. Desperate to uncover the Sultan's secrets by spying on his court, she tries to forget that Jin disappeared just as she was getting closest to him, and that she's a prisoner of the enemy. But the longer she remains, the more she questions whether the Sultan is really the villain she's been told he is, and who’s the real traitor to her sun-bleached, magic-filled homeland.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Miraji, about the rebellion, about djinni and Jin and the Blue-Eyed Bandit. In Traitor to the Throne, the only certainty is that everything will change.

My Review

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

* * W A R N I N G * *

this review might contain spoilers from book 1!

Holy. Shit.

That's really all I can say for this book. The moment I got this, which was pretty late into the day on November 16, I could barely sit still. I didn't even begin reading until later that night because I wanted to absorb it all. I stayed up until 5 AM to read this and I honestly will never regret that.

I know I'm posting this review waaaaay early, but I happened to win a pre-order of the UK version of this book (which releases on February 2) so I thought, eh, why not?

But never mind about that!! This book guys! This series! Holy WOW, where has it BEEN ALL MY LIFE. I absolutely LOVED Rebel of the Sands when I read it (twice!) and it was just so amazing. So rich and unique and refreshing. I fell in love with the characters, the romance, the rebellion. Everything. And this book just proved to me why I did so.

It's been around half a year since Amani (my love) joined the rebellion. In those 6 months, she's nearly died, Jin went off as an undercover soldier in an army, things got a little crazy in their side of the desert, and then it gets crazier. Because they're found. And Amani is taken right to the Sultan's place. Since she's Amani, she uses the chance to gather intelligence, but it's a dangerous game. The sultan is smart, and the palace isn't the desert she's used to. And the problem with keeping with your enemies closer is that they might make you question what you know.

Can I just scream? Is there a text equivalence of screaming? Because that's all Traitor to the Throne made me do. I was worried about a love triangle and second book syndrome AND HAHA. I could not have been more wrong. Alwyn Hamilton knows what she is doing and it's keeping me in agony throughout the entire book. I can't comprehend ANYTHING, much less type out a coherent review, BECAUSE GOOD LORD.

THIS BOOK. THIS SERIES. THESE CHARACTERS. I don't know what to do.

Amani is an idiot and I love her for it. I say that in the fondest way possible because, hell, even she knows it. She's reckless and she's stupid and she's selfish and caring and hilarious and amazing and I love her so much. She's just such an amazing main character, no matter how many risks she takes. I love the character she's grown to be and I know Hamilton did an amazing job with Amani's growth. She's not the same girl you met in Rebel of the Sands at first. While her smart mouth is still there, she's different in a way I'm guessing only a rebellion can cause.

This book is significantly longer than Rebel, but around 200 pages or so. And I was hesitant about that because, again, second book syndrome. While things aren't as action packed as book 1, that doesn't mean things were boring. Amani might be in the palace, but the it's a dangerous place to be. Not just because of jealous wives in the harem or just because of the sultan—there are other things brewing. Being there wouldn't be easy for anyone. So for Amani? Hah. It's one wild, dangerous ride.

Being in the palace meant little of the characters I've grown to love in Rebel. Which makes me sad because I didn't get to see those characters until half of that book, so with this, I was hoping it would be full of them. But! Hamilton has a few tricks up her sleeve because she surprises us with who Amani has to face at the palace. I sure as hell wasn't expecting it and it made it all the more fun.

And while that was a great twist and all, I missed Shazad. I missed Delila. More importantly, I missed Jin.

I love Jin. I love him and Amani more than anything, though, which is different from what I'm used to in books, honestly. (I tend to like the romance, but I know I'm pretty biased towards one party over the other.) But Alwyn Hamilton writes the best romance, holy hell. I am in love with these two and their relationship. They're both so stupid and reckless and no doubt head over in heels in love with each other but also too damn stubborn to admit it to on another. They'll run away from each other instead of facing their problems head on, which will never not make me laugh because I get that so much. I hate confrontation and it's always hilarious when that backfires for them.

I just want more Amani and Jin even though I know they're in the middle of a rebellion and being in love isn't as important as getting the sultan dethroned. But still. Their kisses are just SO AMAZINGLY WRITTEN AND PERFECT like, how can you not love it?? I think I could go on forever about these two and their camaraderie and bickering and flirting but that isn't the point of this book.

Which brings me to another fabulous thing about this series. While there is a romance, it has never overtaken the plot. Not once. The romance is understated in the books because both Jin and Amani know the rebellion is more important.

The cast of secondary characters is an amazing one. From old characters like Shazad and Ahmed, to new ones you'll meet in Traitor, they're all written amazingly and consistent. They're fleshed out and not used just for plot purposes and that is great writing, in my opinion.

There are a lot of twists in this book. I didn't expect any of them. A lot of dangerous and crazy things occur and it left me reeling. I just know that I'm desperately in need of book three, but also highly aware that I'm not ready for this series to end. Because if the second book nearly ripped my heart out of my chest, good god, what will book three do?

Anyway, having ranted, it's pretty clear what I give this. 5 stars, through and through. I highly recommend this series, guys.

Swoon Thursday is a weekly feature hosted by #YABound
in which we share something that made us swoon in the
book we're currently reading or recently finished.

This week I'm featuring Velvet by Temple West!

He didn't answer. Well, he didn't answer verbally. My stomach burst into a thousand butterflies as he pressed his lips against mine.
We stayed like that for a few moments: Adrian holding me, the flames leaping in the fireplace, the only sound was the beat of my own heart in my ears.
Finally, I kissed him back.
He immediately wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer. I ran my fingers through his hair, tangled them in the curls, crawled on his lap, and kissed him again. He leaned forward, lowering us against the bed, pressing his lips against my throat in a kiss.
e-book, 49%
There were so many adorable scenes here that it was hard to pick just one. But I managed and I hope it convinces you to pick up this book!

I absolutely LOVED this book and you can read my review here!

My Review

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Velvet has to be one of the best vampire books I've ever read. That's saying something because it was a vampire series—Cirque du Freak—that got me into reading. And with vampires seemingly dead the past few years, this was both refreshing and fun.

If I had to pick one word for this book, it would definitely be fun. I like to think Temple West had a lot of it while writing this book. Between the characters, the dialogue, and the interactions, there were a lot of golden moments in this book. It genuinely made me laugh and smile and more than once, it made me wish I knew Caitlin and Adrian.

Of course, that isn't to say there isn't more to the book—there definitely is. I think that's what makes West's debut so much better. She balances both the humour and the darkness of the novel exceptionally well.

Caitlin was an angry girl. An angry and sad girl when she moved to her aunt and uncle's farm in Stony Creek. Never once did I think her pain, her anger, her sadness, was over exaggerated. It was raw, it was real, and watching Caitlin slowly overcome those feelings felt amazing. You couldn't help but root for her.

In general, Caitlin felt so relatable. She was funny and smart and bad at math. She didn't do stupid things; wasn't unnecessarily headstrong. She had her whole world turned upside down and she dealt with it accordingly. Hell, she even took Adrian's admission of being a vampire surprisingly—and accurately—well. She never took anyone's shit and did what she thought was right. Suffice to say, I adored Cait. I loved her development, I loved her jokes, and I loved her relationship with Adrian.

Before I get to that, though, I really want to talk about Adrian. He was so cute! He totally came off as a bad boy in the beginning, and I was getting ready for the cliché bad boy attitude, but boy was I surprised. He was such a gentleman and possibly the biggest nerd I've ever come across. He was so sweet, so kind, and gentle to Caitlin. He was always there to help her, never in a condescending manner either. He was patient, helping her both with homework and understanding everything vampire related. He grew throughout the novel as well, going from an antisocial mystery in their high school, to just another student who jokes around with people during lunch.

Their relationship was one of the most realistic I've ever read about, which is hilarious for a vampire novel. They started off as friends and they grew into something more, and watching their relationship develop—all the nerdy jokes, Harry Potter references, and library shenanigans—was honestly the more adorable thing ever. They also had that whole fake relationship thing going on, which is one of my favourite tropes. Watching—well, er, reading about—them fall in love was amazing. Also swoony. They were very swoony.

I loved the friendships in this novel! Trish was an amazing friend and while she wasn't looped into everything Cait was going through—understandably—West never wrote her as someone to just push to the side. She made every side character—from Cait's extended family to the new friends she makes to Adrian's family—all important. She adds depth to them, makes them realistic. West truly excels with her characters.

Overall, I thought this novel was BRILLIANT. I can't believe I waited so long to read it! 4 stars!

book we're hotly anticipating.

This week's WoW is...

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell
Book #1 in the Last Magician duology
Publishes July 18, 2017 by Simon Pulse

Stop the Magician.

Steal the book.

Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she's been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta's training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1901 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by
the wonderful people at The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's TTT topic is...

Freebie! I decided to choose my favourite YA couples from recent reads!

I'M BAAAAAAAAAAAAACK. I know it's only been about a week, but it's been a miserable about a week and I missed posting (though even those were slightly, uh, minimal).

But anyway! Without further adooooooooo, my favourite couples!

♩ Adrian + Caitlin from Velvet by Temple West

I actually recently just finished this book and I absolutely loved it! There was a slow burn thing going on, a fake relationship (one of my favourite tropes), and just a lot of fun all around. Adrian was different than typical "bad boys" you come across in YA and I was all for it. Caitlin was funny and relatable and I adored her and her snarky remarks. The two were just precious!

♩ Amani + Jin from Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

Rebel of the Sands was one of my favourite books of last year and part of that was because of Amani and Jin. The two were not at all what I expected but their romance is explosive—it is fiery and a tangled mess and I love every single bit of it. They are a force to be reckoned with apart, but together, they are so much more. I love these two to death and absolutely live for their kiss scenes.

♩ Ash + Piper from Chase the Dark by Annette Marie

I LOVE Annette Marie. I love her romance and her action because she does them so bloody well. The action in the Steel & Stone series is really breathtaking but the romance. It never once overtakes the actual plot, but at the same time, it sure as hell isn't subtle. It's there and it's powerful and steamy. I loved every kiss the two have shared and good lord, I need to reread it. Now.

♩ Shazi + Khalid from The Wrath & the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh

I started this series a little later than most people but I'm just glad I picked it up in any case! I loved how headstrong, but not stupid Shazi was and I loved how Khalid slowly let his defences down around that firecracker of a girl. Their romance was both sweet and sensual and I loved how Ahdieh wrote the two of them! Definitely a great OTP.

♩ Nemesis + Tyrus from The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

OHHHHHH, FRIENDS, how I absolutely LOVE this book! I can't believe I read it so damn long ago but yo! The romance was just perfect here!!! I'm using so many exclamation points for no apparent reasons but GOSH I loved this book so much and I loved Nemesis + her badass attitude and Tyrus + his cunning. The two were FIRE together and I totally need to relive this amazing book.

♩ Arin + Kestrel from The Winner's Kiss by Marie Rutkoskie

Since the first kiss between two, my stomach has felt nothing but butterflies for them. I love these two so much and gosh, their romance was so complicated but so, so, so sweet. Bittersweet, me thinks. They are both independent and fierce and the last book, Arin just about killed me. Kestrel and he are so lucky to have each other, honestly. They are amazing.

♩ Avery + Stellan from Map of Fates by Maggie Hall

HOO BOY was this book hot. Sort of figuratively, sort of literally—in the content sense, of course. ANYWAY, technicalities aside! Let's talk my OTP, Stellan and Avery. I never liked Jack because when you have someone who you can fancast as Lucky Blue Smith, the clear winner is right there. Avery and Stellan are absolutely amazing together, if I do say so myself. The one scene here? Totally perfect, totally swoon worthy, and totally need more.

♩ John + Elizabeth from The King Slayer by Virginia Boecker

They are so cute! I will admit that I didn't see as many cute, crush moments as I did in The Witch Hunter in this finale, but towards the end, I loved them all over. I always John was super adorable in the first book and Elizabeth was a strong, fierce main character. Seeing them together made me so happy!

♩ Etta + Nicholas from Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken

Oh, gosh, these two. This book. So many feelings! I love how Bracken writes—not just romantic relationships, but all sorts, from familial and friendships—but this romantic one definitely has a special place in my heart. Etta and Nicholas are so loyal to each other and they would do anything for the other. Most of this novel didn't feature them together, but reading it, one could definitely tell how much they loved each other. It was beautiful, if a bit painful. I loved it to death.

♩ Carlston + Helen from The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman

Having read the second book fairly recently, my need for these two to be together and HAPPY just went way beyond the highest level of desperation + need. I adored the broody Carlston in both the first book and its followup, and I just fell in love with Helen even more in book two. They are strong separate but they are even more when they work together and the little taste of them in both books makes my little fangirl heart just die of happiness.

And that's quite it! I have so many more lovely OTPs but in the last year, I absolutely fell for this lot.

What are some of your favourite OTPs?

This week's TTT topic is...

Top ten hidden gems I read recently!

I'd say that I read a lot of hidden gems, but I do think that's kind of a lie. But! I do try to look for them a lot! Here are some of my recent favourites!

♩ Heartstone by Elle Katharine White
♩ Prom Queen Perfect by Clarisse David
♩ Red Winter by Annette Marie

♩ A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas
♩ Places No One Knows by Brenna Yovanoff
♩ Break Me Like a Promise by Tiffany Schmidt

♩ The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman
♩ Nora & Kettle by Lauren Nicolle Taylor
♩ The Long Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

And that would have to be it! I feel that these books are never really all that talked about—and well, one of them isn't out yet, but there should be a hype around it.
