This week I'm featuring Want by Cindy Pon!

I could only think of one way to distract her and took a step forward. Close. Closer than I should ever be. “Does this feel familiar, then?” My voice had gone rough, and I swallowed. Fought the impulse to clear my throat.
She nodded imperceptibly.
I raised my other hand and trailed my fingers through her soft hair, before cupping my palm against the back of her neck, leaning in, and kissing her. She stiffened at first, then swayed into me, and I could feel her melding against my body in parts: her breasts, her hips, her thighs. She wrapped both arms around my neck and opened her mouth to me.
Gods.
My body felt electrified, every nerve standing on end. Crackling.
But I held back. Tried to hold back. I shouldn’t have done this. Though she was urging me to kiss her deeper, seeking me with her tongue, so I gave in to the sensations. Gave in to the kiss. My hand gripped her waist, the other still clasping the back of her neck. Daiyu let her palms wander, across my shoulders then my chest, trailing her fingertips down my stomach. All the while exploring, tasting me with her lips and her tongue, as though if she kissed me long enough, she’d find the answer she sought so desperately.

I loooooooooved this book so much! I can't wait for you guys to read this one!

That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston
Standalone Novel
Publishes October 3, 2017 by Dutton Books for Young Readers

Set in a near-future world where the British Empire never fell and the United States never rose, That Inevitable Victorian Thing is a novel of love, duty, and the small moments that can change people and the world.

Victoria-Margaret is the crown princess of the empire, a direct descendent of Victoria I, the queen who changed the course of history two centuries earlier. The imperial practice of genetically arranged matchmaking will soon guide Margaret into a politically advantageous marriage like her mother before her, but before she does her duty, she'll have one summer incognito in a far corner of empire. In Toronto, she meets Helena Marcus, daughter of one of the empire's greatest placement geneticists, and August Callaghan, the heir apparent to a powerful shipping firm currently besieged by American pirates. In a summer of high-society debutante balls, politically charged tea parties, and romantic country dances, Margaret, Helena, and August discover they share an unusual bond and maybe a one in a million chance to have what they want and to change the world in the process —just like the first Queen Victoria.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by
the wonderful people at The Broke and the Bookish.

∙∙∙∙∙·♫·*·♪..♪·*·♫·∙∙∙∙∙

This week's TTT topic is...

Top ten things that will make me not wanna read a book

Like last wee's top ten—things that'll make me read a book—this one is just as hard. The more I think about it, the more superficial it seems... but I can't help it.

For the sake of making it easier for me, I've chosen things that turn my interest for a book down both before I start it and while I'm reading it!

♩ The girl's life changes when she meets her love interest
↪  Don't feed me this bullshit. Do not. I hate when a girl's life goes completely crazy because her love interest walks into her life. It always feels like her life before the LI walked in wasn't there. I hate this.

♩ The main character "fights her attraction" to the love interest

↪  This is sort of going off the first thing. It usually happens in sequels, but in first books as well. It has me rolling my eyes so hard.

♩ Bad pitches

↪  You lose me right away at "Red Queen meets..." or "Throne of Glass meets..." Like, sweetie. Honey. No thanks.

♩ Bad covers
↪  You know you're like this too. Not all covers are appealing.

♩ The forbidden love triangle

↪  Siiiiiigh. It's usually worse in sequels but a love triangle, or any love shape for that matter, is a nuisance. It makes the plot more romance driven, adds more romantic drama. I can do without that.

♩ Insta-love/attraction

↪  I've heard people defend this and hey, it's fine! Sometimes it works! But it doesn't work for me. Not just because I find it unbelievable, but rather because I don't see the chemistry. I have no idea how the relationship even formed.

♩ Animal cruelty

↪  This doesn't even need an explanation.

♩ Revenge in contemporaries

↪  I'm singling out contemporaries because in fantasy, no one's seeking revenge on their ex or something. Not that all contemporaries where revenge is a thing does that, but few do and there's literally nothing that makes that okay. I'd rather a lost princess seek revenge on some king.

♩ Same ol' fantasy plots

↪  You have a princess. Or a killer. There's an uprising. A rebellion. A whatever. It's the same thing over and over.

♩ Too heavily romance based

↪  I like having a romance in my books as much as the next person, but like I've said before, I hate it overtaking the plot. When there are hints at it, that's cruel teasing, but I'd rather have that than two characters constantly arguing about their relationship or whatever.

Breaker and the Sun by Lauren Nicolle Taylor
Paper Stars, book 2 (companion series)
Publishes May 8, 2017 by Clean Teen Publishing Inc.
e-ARC provided by publisher
Add it on GoodReads!
New from Lauren Nicolle Taylor, the best-selling author of Nora and Kettle, comes a fresh take on a classic tale.

Breaker Van Winkle is a recently returned Vietnam vet, struggling with PTSD and the difficulties of readjusting to civilian life with his mother. Eighteen-year-old Sunny is a high-achieving Chinese-French immigrant who fled Vietnam during the war. Sunny is usually as cheerful as her name implies, but she has her struggles too. Haunted by violent memories of the bombing that killed her parents, and chafing under the rule of her eccentric grandmother, she finds solace deep in the Catskills, at a place she calls the Ugly Tree.

When Breaker stumbles upon Sunny and the Ugly Tree, things start to change. They are drawn to each other, and feel called to the tree. As they spend more time together and their relationship deepens, they notice that their time at the tree is becoming twisted somehow. Sunny's mind yawns and her ambitions begin to slip away. Breaker feels safe and carefree, his memories finally burying themselves in the distant past. They are being lulled toward a tempting, peaceful sleep—but there is a cost to this magical serenity, and it may be more than either of them can bear...

My Review

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Last year, when I read Nora & Kettle, I immediately fell in love. The story was beautiful and heartbreaking and such a wonderful retelling, both unique in its execution and refreshing in its setting. I was eagerly hoping for a sequel and I was beyond the moon when I heard about Breaker and the Sun.

This book follows a new story with new characters, so you don't need to read Nora & Kettle to understand it!

I really liked this book. It was a bit hard to get into at first because Taylor immediately introduces the tragedies both main characters faced. I hadn't planned on finding out those so soon but Taylor definitely gives readers more into Break and Sunny. She shows their struggles and how they fight so hard to overcome their pasts, to move on with the challenges that face them now. It was definitely a difficult road for these two, but they managed it and Taylor wrote their story beautifully.

One of the things that stood out to me most about this book was the various types of relationships. While most were familial, there were a few outside that circle, as well. And although you don't read too much about them, I still found them amazing. My favourites, though, were the sibling relationship between Breaker and his little brother, Little Red, and Sunny with her grandparents, Ama and Gong. It isn't easy for either of them—Breaker trying to assimilate to his life again, Sunny dealing with Ama—but they were complex and realistic and the author truly did a great job with them.

This book tackles two important things: PTSD and prejudice. They're both sensitive topics but Lauren Nicolle Taylor knew what she was doing. If I felt uneasy in the beginning, it was gone as I was reading the story. Taylor is masterful with her prose and I think she did justice depicting both.

With gorgeous writing, an adorable romance, complex characters, and a dash of magic, Breaker and the Sun was an incredible novel, one that I'd highly recommend. Just get the tissues ready!

∙∙∙∙∙·♫·*·♪..♪·*·♫·∙∙∙∙∙

This week I'm featuring Breaker and the Sun by Lauren Nicolle Taylor!

Context: Breaker was about to lean in for a kiss on the cheek and it got awkward.
Is there any harm in it? Probably not.
Would Ama kill me? Only if she finds out.
“Okay,” I say, nodding my head and offering my cheek.
He sucks in a break, leaning back. “Are you serious?”
Crossing my arms, I nod. “Yes.”
He shifts uncomfortably in his seat. “Well, now it feels weird. Um...”
I close my eyes and tilt my head up. “Allons. Come on. Just do it.”
I wait a full ten seconds before I feel his lops press to my cheek, warm, rough, dry. The stars I swallowed seem to spin and shoot around inside my chest.
Giggling, I open my eyes. He's smiling. His has a nice smile. Shy like a jackal.
“That was pretty strange, Sunny,” he says, knocking my shoulder.

I know it's not a physical swoon—I haven't reached one yet and I'm slowly getting through this one! I already ship these two and this was just such a precious moment!

the wonderful people at The Broke and the Bookish.

∙∙∙∙∙·♫·*·♪..♪·*·♫·∙∙∙∙∙

This week's TTT topic is...

Top ten that will make me instantly want to read a book

Okay, okay, I've never actually thought about this because sometimes it's just the blurb itself?? It's weird. Anyway, I'll try to figure it out...

♩ Victoria or V.E. Schwab mentioned
↪  That's... that's it. That is it. That's all I need to pick up the damn book. It's by her? SIGN ME UP. Like her work? Well, I'M ON BOARD.

♩ Fairy-tale retellings
↪  I love retellings! I try to read as many as I can about as many different fairy-tales possible.

♩ Hate-to-love trope
↪ If it's hinted at or mentioned how much the two parties hate each other, or just how much the main character hates a guy, I'm soooooold. I didn't realise how much I loved this trope until I began noticing it on twitter and other books I've been reading.

♩ Banter
↪ This is more of a thing I need to hear from friends if they've read the book. If banter is mentioned just once, I'm a goner and I will need that book in my hands by yesterday.

♩ Someone's planning to kill a guy
↪ I've fallen too many times into the trap that is the princess killing a prince. And falling in love. That will always capture my attention because REVENGE. It's beautiful, even if it's hardly ever well done.

♩ PRETTY COVER
↪ Don't you dare lie to me and say you've never fallen for a pretty cover. I WILL KNOW IT'S A FILTHY LIE. Anything with beautiful typography or silhouettes, pretty colours—whatever! I am all heart eyes and WANT.

♩ Author I know/have read before
↪ This is different that my first one because Schwab is my favourite author. But, anyway. I'm the type of person that likes to keep up with the latest books, especially if it's a book by someone whose name I recognise or have read before. It's not instant need to read, but it definitely does get me interested!

♩ A sequel
↪ This seems stupidly obvious but I think we can relate. Whether the first book ended in a cliff hanger or not, I will always need the following books.

♩ Intriguing title
↪ Much like cover-love, I'm all about title-love. Some books have amazing titles and that alone is enough to get me to want it badly.

♩ It mentions a Muslim character
↪ This is actually pretty rare, which is pretty sad, lol. When I was younger, a part of me always wished that there was a character with my name—which was highly unlikely, and frankly? It still is. So I just hoped for a Muslim character. Luckily, there are a few making their debut soon and I couldn't be happier!

♩ There's something in the blurb...
↪ Errrm, this is kind of vague, I know, but trust me, it's relatable. It's always hard to pinpoint what it is about a blurb that makes you want to read it, but it is there. It's happened to me so many times, and whether it's a pitch (i.e., Six of Crows meets some random movie I've never watched*) or just a sentence (i.e., she sells her soul to the devil and is destined to be forgotten by everyone she meets**), it'll make me really, really need it.

*This is about Amanda Foody's new 2018 series, The Shadow Game. Book 1 is titled Ace of Shades.
**This is about Victoria Schwab's future release, The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue.

Flame in the Mist, book 1
Publishes May 16, 2017 by G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
e-ARC provided by Netgalley
Add it on GoodReads!
The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor's favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family's standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she's quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she's ever known.

My Review

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Look. If you've read and loved Ahdieh's debut series, I'm preeeeetty sure that you're going to love this one, too. Because despite being something utterly different, this has Renée Ahdieh all over it, from her prose, to her characters, and basically everything else. Which, y'know, would make sense, considering she wrote it and all, but you get what I mean.

I really did like this book. I'm still a bit over the moon over having experienced this novel so soon after I met her. (She's super duper sweet, by the way!) It was both not what I expected, yet everything I wanted and it left me both anguished upon finishing it, yet somehow content. It's weird. Not the book, just me, because the book is fantastic.

I loved Mariko. She was so different than Shazi from The Wrath & the Dawn, but she was no less likable. She isn't a naturally brave character because she relies on her mind more than anything else. Mariko is absolutely brilliant and her voice is superb. Often times when a book is written in third person point of view and features various characters, I always end up liking one more than the others. Mariko's was definitely my favourite, not just because it's where all of the action and danger occurred, but also because her character alone made me feel more connected with her.

She does a lot of dangerous things in the book and it made for a very exciting story. She was originally being sent off to be wed to a prince, but her convoy was attacked near the forest. Instead of going back home, she dressed up as a boy and made up a plan to get close to the group, known as the Black Clan, that did this—to infiltrate them—so she can figure out why. She definitely has to prove herself and it was both admirable and amazing how she went about it.

I loved reading about the Black Clan! There were several members and while all of them sort of antagonised her when she was captured, she slowly begins to see what they do just as they slowly begin to trust her. In fact, there's a nice camaraderie that develops between her and two of the members!

Gah. The romance. I liked it? A lot? But I also didn't? I mean, LOOK. I loved Ahdieh's romances—this one isn't an exception because WOW. But something about it just felt weird to me. It was still swoony and amazing as the one she wrote between Shazi and Khalid, and I loved how they bickered and tested each other constantly. It's just, the way that finally initiated the ship bothered me. It just seemed kind of out of place? Otherwise, wooooooooooow. I may or may not have read some of the scenes several times because swoon. It's definitely a hate-to-love and what's not to like about that?

I also wanna mention Kenshin, Mariko's twin brother. Though you don't see them interacting together for most of the book, considering he's tracking her and she's infiltrating a dangerous group, there's still a strong connection, and my god, if it didn't break my heart, I don't know what did. Kenshin downright refused to believe his sister was dead and he did every single thing he could to find her and bring her back to safety. I doubt there were any lines he wouldn't have crossed to find her. It was so great to see that, yet heartbreaking because their goals were so different.

Needless to say, Ahdieh's writing is impeccable. From her characters, to the dialogue, to the world, and even the food, everything was beautiful and amazing. I found it to be well researched and extremely developed. Books with amazing prose usually do lag a bit, and there were a few instances here, but she always brings you back and keeps things moving and interesting. She's masterful at creating urgency in her scenes, so much that I found myself itching to find out what was next.

I find it amazing how she writes her dialogue. I won't lie, most of the time, when the leader of the Black Clan was talking, I just found it very amazing someone could talk like that—not pretentious or anything, just really, really, er, wise? I suppose. Had it been any other author trying to attempt, I probably would have laughed or cringed or both. But Ahdieh made it work, though there were a few times I did find it weird. Me thing, though. Feel free to disregard.

While I personally loved this, and definitely did get certain Mulan vibes, I can't say I really think of it as a retelling? It's not a bad thing, per se, but it's just... I think of Flame in the Mist as something that adopts elements from the story of Mulan and to call it a retelling isn't entirely accurate.

So! Overall, I'm giving this 4 stars—I'd initially given it 5 but I've had time to mull it over. I still adore the book to pieces and I hope you guys like it too!

“Oh, hell.” He strode toward me as the door groaned on its hinges. “I’m going to die anyway.”
He hauled my face close. I twisted my fingers into his hair and slammed his mouth down on mine.
It was a kiss that raged like battle, exhilarating and immediate. His lips tasted of salt. My racing heartbeat throbbed in my ears. I wanted more of him. I grabbed the front of his shirt in my fist, to pull him closer—pull him with me.

I wanted to avoid using this book because it comes out so late, but I'm cheating here. (That, and the last few books I've read haven't exactly made me swoon or anything close.)

Anyway! I love this book to pieces. It's swoony, adventurous, and full of humour! This one is a short swoon but I really love it. I can't wait for you guys to pick this one up!

Tera was trained for one purpose: to pilot one of the lethal God Machines, massive robots for a never-ending war.

With secret orders to report on Tera, Jaewon becomes Tera’s partner, earning her reluctant respect. But as respect turns to love, Jaewon begins to question his loyalty to an oppressive regime that creates weapons out of humans. As the project prepares to go public amidst rumors of a rebellion, Jaewon must decide where he stands—as a soldier of the Neo State, or a rebel of the people.

Pacific Rim meets Korean action dramas in this mind-blowing, New Visions Award-winning science fiction debut.

This just sounds sooooo good! I've been excited for this novel for a while now and ever since Axie Oh had posted the pinterest board for this (psst, this was her latest aesthetic), I was all heart eyes over it! September can't come fast enough!

This week's TTT topic is...

Top ten unique books I've read

This one was hard. There are so many great books out there, but honestly? So few have truly original concepts—many are the same thing rewired, and that's fine! Many of those make for great books, sometimes.

But to truly find something original? It seems so rare. So! Here are the books that have come close to that!

♩ The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I think it's safe to say that finding something like The Night Circus will be an impossible feat. This is probably one of the most magical and unique books I've ever read.

♩ A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

I've never quite come across any writer that's quite like Schwab. I've loved all of her books and all of them have taken one concept many of us know and has managed to make something unrecognisable out of it. This series has a unique magic system, Antaris, and parallel Londons. It's amazing and heartbreaking, yay!

♩ Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

Many authors have done time travel, as have many shows, but never quite like how Bracken does it in Passenger. Time travel here requires no weird machine, but an ability and passages that take the travelers back to a certain time and place.

♩ The Secret of a Heart Note by Stacey Lee

The idea of aromateurs is definitely a new one. In this novel, Mim is one of the only two aromateurs around and it's her and her mother's job to use her extraordinary sense of smell to create "love potions". The book itself has smells for various emotions and it was such an adorable novel!

♩ The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

This one isn't so much as unique as it is special for me. Many books tackle the issue of rape, rape culture, and sexism. This book dealt with that and more, and it genuinely means so much to me.

♩ Saga by Brian K. Vaugh, art by Fiona Staples

You've never seen space adventures until you've read a volume of Saga. It's a wild, sort of disturbing, lots of NSFW adventure but damn, if it isn't addicting and amazing. Not to mention there's so much inclusion, both in regards to sexuality and race!

♩ Illuminae by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

Illuminae, and its followup, Gemina are both told through a lot of weird information. Definitely one of the more mind-blowing sci-fi/dystopia novels, the books aren't told in a normal narrative, but through video feeds, chats, interviews, and more. And it's so much fun!

♩ My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows

Frankly, I've never researched Lady Jane on my own but I'm only a little bit sure her story wasn't exactly how it was portrayed here. My Lady Jane is a funny and whimsical novel that tells the story of Jane's rise to power and everything after. It was a load of fun to read, especially since it involved tons of banter and, oddly enough, animals.

♩ Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke

I actually did not like this one, but it was definitely one of the weirder novels I've come across. On GR, it's under magical realism... and I suppose? For me, it fell flat and confusing, but it certainly isn't one of your regular old stories.

♩ A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

The concept behind this novel was amazing—a piece of technology that can take you to your body, but on a different universe. The whole idea behind parallel universes was what sold me! Unfortunately, the author focused too much on the romance so it didn't work out for me. But the idea behind the series was definitely an intriguing on!

What are some of the unique books you guys have read?
