As an orphan ward of the Sisterhood, eighteen-year-old Kalinda is destined for nothing more than a life of seclusion and prayer. Plagued by fevers, she’s an unlikely candidate for even a servant’s position, let alone a courtesan or wife. Her sole dream is to continue living in peace in the Sisterhood’s mountain temple.

But a visit from the tyrant Rajah Tarek disrupts Kalinda’s life. Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah’s ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. Her only solace comes in the company of her guard, the stoic but kind Captain Deven Naik.

Faced with the danger of a tournament to the death—and her growing affection for Deven—Kalinda has only one hope for escape, and it lies in an arcane, forbidden power buried within her.

In Emily R. King’s thrilling fantasy debut, an orphan girl blossoms into a warrior, summoning courage and confidence in her fearless quest to upend tradition, overthrow an empire, and reclaim her life as her own.

My Review

♫ ♫

Haha, awkward. How badly I wanted to like this book and how drastically it fell from my expectations.

Look, frankly, I was wary about this book. I was giving it the benefit of the doubt but I am always wary about authors writing about a culture such as this one. It's not that I think they didn't do their research well... it's that I just don't think they'll be able to tell this culture's story well. As it should be told, if that makes sense.

Anyway, despite that, I went into it still hoping I'd like it and sadly, I did not. The problem? At its heart, it's boring. It is just really, really boring.

There were things happening, sure, but absolutely none of that captured my attention. From the get-go, it was dull. I didn't connect with nor like any of the characters; didn't feel excited or much of anything while reading the entire book. I actually had to push myself to keep reading this.

Part of this was because of the writing. It just wasn't my style. It felt vague and, like I've said, dull. The main character, Kalinda, felt like she had zero personality, while side characters didn't stand out or actually have much character to them. Basically, everyone felt generic, two-dimensional, and booooooooring.

Uh, what else... Oh, yes. There was a decent female friendship but it didn't last very long, which was disheartening. There were more interactions with mean girls rather than having women support one another, which just made everything worse, really. For the love of all things holy, there were fights, which were encouraged all of that, along with torture, so really. No thanks.

I didn't like the romance. At this point, I don't even care that it was insta-love because like most everything else about this book, there was nothing that made it interesting, gave it life, made me want these two characters together. Most of their interactions were cringe-worthy at best. While the guy, Deven, was decent, he didn't stand out.

Okay, anyway, I'm beginning to feel like a broken record. Overall: it was boring, nothing caught my interest, I didn't like it, and that's about it. 2 stars.

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
Standalone Novel
Publishes May 30, 2017 by Simon Pulse
e-ARC provided by Edelweiss
Add it on GoodReads!
A laugh-out-loud, heartfelt YA romantic comedy, told in alternating perspectives, about two Indian-American teens whose parents have arranged for them to be married.

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

My Review

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

I won't lie; in the beginning, I didn't think I'd like this book. I had a problem with Dimple because I thought she went out of her way to be harsh to Rishi, who hadn't really done anything to warrant that type of treatment.

In any case, that changed eventually. When Dimple Met Rishi was a super fun and super adorable and I loved how eerily relatable it was. I'm not Indian, but I am South Asian like both main characters. While my culture isn't the same as theirs, there were some parallels.

The reason I liked this book as much as I did was because of the parallels. You have to understand, it's hard to relate to mostly white teenagers in books, even those with parents that have such high expectations. I can't act out and rebel like they do, or just go my own way. So finding a book that came close to the issues I went through, it means a lot! It's so hard to come across anything remotely close to the events that resemble my life. There aren't really any words to this feeling—seeing echoes of you/your life in a book. Middle school me, who never thought she'd see someone with her culture, her skin, her name anywhere—she would have freaked at this.

Anyway, there are other things I enjoyed about this book, so moving on. First was Rishi, who I found so cute! How he dealt with Dimple was amazing, especially considering that it was a bit unfair how she treated him in the beginning. But as time went by and they got to know each other better, I liked how he stayed true to himself, a little bit silly and a go-with-the-flow kinda guy. He was also so cordial and sweet and never forced Dimple into anything. He helped her whenever he could and was ever the gentleman. He was also a very traditional guy so it was difficult for him to realise that it would be okay for him to pursue something he truly enjoyed instead of doing what his parents wanted him to do. Most families aren't supportive of this, especially when you want to major in something... less than practical. It was dealt with nicely in the book, being a fluffy contemporary and all, even though, I personally found it a bit unrealistic. (But I'm a pessimist so that's irrelevant.)

Like I mentioned earlier, I wasn't sure that I would like Dimple. She made it difficult in the end, but eventually, I understood it. I also felt that Rishi brought out a softer side to her and, like most of the other things in this book, I thought that Dimple was cute. She was still her headstrong and determined self and I admired that! But it was adorable to see her falling for Rishi and felt great to see her not give up in the slightest when going for her dreams.

I was so happy to see a female friendship in the book! Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with the direction it went it. I loved Celia and while I guess I understand it went that way... I still wish it had been handled differently. Despite that, the way it was resolved was endearing.

Also, can I just mention how the author included both one of my favourites movies, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi? I love that film so, so much. When I got to the part where it was mentioned, I just had to go and youtube the song mentioned! Menon also included a band I like, Transviolet, and OH MY GOD. I nearly died when one of the characters liked them AND the author herself!

Overall, this was a lovely debut! If you're excited about this one, I think you'll really enjoy it! It's a perfect rom-com and full of cute and I can't wait for you guys to read it!

The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson
Standalone Novel

Add it on GoodReads!
When all hope is gone, how do you survive?

Before the war, Eden’s life was easy—air conditioning, ice cream, long days at the beach. Then the revolution happened, and everything changed.

Now a powerful group called the Wolfpack controls the earth and its resources. Eden has lost everything to them. They killed her family and her friends, destroyed her home, and imprisoned her. But Eden refuses to die by their hands. She knows the coordinates to the only neutral ground left in the world, a place called Sanctuary Island, and she is desperate to escape to its shores.

Eden finally reaches the island and meets others resistant to the Wolves—but the solace is short-lived when one of Eden’s new friends goes missing. Braving the jungle in search of their lost ally, they quickly discover Sanctuary is filled with lethal traps and an enemy they never expected.

This island might be deadlier than the world Eden left behind, but surviving it is the only thing that stands between her and freedom.

My Review

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

The Sandcastle Empire was a surprising book for me. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. It's definitely a strong debut, one that takes a different direction than most dystopian novels usually take.

Several decades in the future, the world is controlled by a group referred to the Wolf pack. Having lost everything to them, Eden makes an escape to an island—the only neutral territory left behind—that her father mentioned in his survival guide book that Eden carries with her everywhere. She's joined by three other girls on the way to the island, only to find that it isn't quite the sanctuary they'd hoped it would be. When one of the girls goes missing, well. Let's just say it kind of solidifies it's not what they were expecting.

The unique thing about this book is the way the world seemingly met its end. It focused on climate change and how that was partially the reason they are in that place right now. Of course, it's more complex than that, but I don't want to give too much away. I liked this, though, because it wasn't because of some war or invasion that ravaged us. Kayla Olson writes a novel that's highly plausible, and it's actually a bit scary to think about. This continually plays a role in the book so I'm just going to end it there.

I found the writing to be spectacular, which was definitely a reason I fell in love with the book. It was paced well, never lingering too much in one part, but moving along at a good pace, so you were caught up with the action and adventure. The prose itself was quite stunning! It wasn't flowery, like I've seen so many fantasy books try to be, so much so that the plot is often lost under the purple prose. The way Olson writes would normally seem at odds with a book in the dystopian genre, but she made it work and pulled it off beautifully! More often than not, she also made me take a lot of what I have no for granted, seeing as nearly everything in Eden's world is limited.

Speaking of Eden, the author did an amazing job with the characters! I loved Eden and her voice throughout. She was determined, and her love for her dad kept her going even when things seemed hopeless. More importantly, I loved how level-headed she was. She never rushed head first into things or made brash decisions—she thought things through and decided the best course of action. She was smart and capable and an amazing narrator.

There were great side characters, too. I particularly loved Alexa, even though she came off as really rude upon the girls' initial meeting. But she created a... well, I don't know about close, but definitely a decent friendship with Eden, enough that they both relied on one another, and eventually going far enough to trust the other.

The blurb doesn't say anything about a romance, which I personally found a selling point. But there is one, and if you've heard rumours about a love triangle, rest assured, there isn't one. I won't lie, I was very wary about the romance for very superficial reasons—I thought it could have been out of the picture entirely, but c'est la vie. But the two complemented one another and they worked great together. More importantly, the romance didn't overtake the plot or Eden's mind or whatever and it was well written, so no complaints from me.

There were a few twists in the end, and I should have expected them but I didn't. They didn't catch me off guard, really, or surprise me, even, so that was a bit disappointing.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this. It's a pretty great debut and I really enjoyed it! 4 stars.

This been a loooong time coming but I'm a believer in better late than never. More than midway through May, I present you all the April things and a small explanation!

∙∙∙∙∙·♫·*·♪..♪·*·♫·∙∙∙∙∙

Since the beginning of the year, I've taken to doing a small list of things that make me like my month better, since at the end, I always assume the worst. Considering April was a few weeks ago and I have terrible memory, there's not much I really remember, so I'm going to forgo it this month.

Now, for the other thing.

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but for most of May, I took a sort of blogging break. And maybe it's ridiculous--I haven't even blogged for an entire year and I'm already doing this--but... I think I needed it. It's not that I think blogging is boring--it's not. I haven't realised, nor taken the time to realise just how much I've come to like it.

Anyway, every May this seems to happen. A decline in nearly everything for me. In the past years, it was with reading--in normal months, I'd read around 10-20 books and in May I could barely manage six.

This year, it was stress. Self induced stress. From school, from family, from friendships. I won't go into detail but I really could have done without. It got to a point where I physically didn't want to do anything, so typing up weekly posts and reviews just brought me down further.

I planned on staying on break until the end of May, but I decided against that. There's still a week left and I want to make the most of it. Be on the lookout for reviews and lots of them soon!

a very ARC-ish readathon recap

A very ARC-ish readathon is a low pressure sort of challenge that lasts the entire month of April. It's hosted by Aimal over at Bookshelves and Paperbacks.

I'm happy to say that I did read only ARCs during April. I actually did stick to my TBR for the most part. I completed three out of the six, which is better than I let myself hope for. As for the ones I didn't get to... Well, I tried with one and got bored. I sincerely hope to get to the other two.

What I noticed during this challenge is that reading advance copies only is boring. It feels more obligatory than reading for fun, which is what I do. After I finished my last book for that month, I was so eager to get back to released books. Now I'm back to reading ARCs, so it's very ??? for me.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed doing this. Whether this happens again in the future or not, I'll definitely be signing up! I do know that there's one for August so I'm looking forward to that.

.•♫•♬•.•♫•♬•.

onto May!

Since most of May has already passed on by, I thought about ignoring this part. As you could have guessed, most of my April books went unread... well, all of them did, actually.

But anyway, these were the books that released in May that I was/am eager to get to!

♩ Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han* (May 2)
♩ The Seafarer's Kiss by Julie Ember (May 4)
♩ Violet Grenade by Victoria Scott (May 16)

♩ I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo (May 30)
♩ Dark Breaks the Dawn by Sara B. Larson (May 30)
♩ In a Perfect World by Trish Doller (May 30)

*I actually tried reading this and ended up dropping it.

.•♫•♬•.•♫•♬•.

Well, that's all of April in a nutshell. I hope everything is okay with you guys and that you're reading some amazing books.

Did you guys have a good month back in April, or the past few weeks of May? What are some of your most anticipated May/June releases?

BUT. That isn't all! Scroll down below for a look into the book!

Exclusive Excerpt!

“They’re coming from the front!” Nora screamed over the crescendo of the engine gaining speed. On cue, the train lurched as an endwig was splattered to a bloody mess on the point of the engine’s pilot.

“Bloody cogs,” Florence cursed. The Vicar Alchemist had sent her to protect the mission as the Revolver, but one of her wasn’t going to be enough. “I’m going to the engine.”

“What are we going to do?” The usually self-sure Nora had the face of a cornered hare.

“You’re going to fight.” Florence passed her a weapon.

“I’ve never shot a gun before.”

“Now is a great time to learn.”

“I’m an Alchemist!”

Seriously, Florence was a breath away from shooting the woman herself. “You’re dead if you don’t adapt! There’s three more bombs exactly like the ones you just used, right there. Just fend them off until the train gets up to speed. But don’t use any other disks.”

Florence had no more time to waste as the train lurched again. They just had to survive until the train reached full speed. For all the endwig were, they certainly couldn’t keep up with a locomotive.

She hoped.

The wind whipped her hair around her face as she stuck her head from the train car. Florence reached out for the ladder to the right of the door, scaling up before another endwig could emerge. She swung up just in time as an explosion nearly blew her foot clean off.

“By the five guilds, you two only had three bombs!” she screamed over the wind, not knowing if they could hear. “Ration them a bit!”

Standing, Florence looked in horror at the tracks ahead. Dozens of endwig lined the path, running eagerly to meet the train. She loaded six canisters at once.

Jumping to the tender, Florence lost her footing atop the moving train car. A nail snapped clean off as she sought a grip that would prevent her from being thrown to certain death. If she fell now, she would never get back on the vessel. She’d be torn limb from limb.

Gritting her teeth, Florence rose to her knees, shooting two endwig in the process. She wedged herself between two grooves on the top of the tender. Blood pooled around her shins as she dug them into the metal for a grip where there was none, but she was stable enough to take aim, and that meant she could open fire.

Five shots down, and Florence reloaded her gun. Endwig came relentlessly like a never-ending nightmare. But the train didn’t gain any more speed. She repeated the process, waiting for the vessel to be like her bullets, whizzing through the night at deadly speeds.

“Anders, now would be a great time to open her up!” she screamed.

There was no reply.

“Anders, Rotus, we need speed, get us out of here faster!”

Five long claws curled around the door of the engine in answer. Florence watched in horror as the white silhouette of an endwig, dotted in the black blood of a Chimera, pulled itself from the engine room. Florence swallowed hard.

They were without Rivet and Raven, stumbling through the darkness, enemies at all sides. She raised her gun slowly, looking fearlessly at the face of death itself. Her revolver was steady over the rocking of the train.

“You think I’m not used to this?” Her mouth curled into a mad grin. “I’ve been fighting my way out of the darkness my whole life. And you’re not going to stop me now.”

Gunshots echoed through the forest.

My Review

♫ ♫

Alas, I can't push myself to read this anymore. The beginning of the novel itself didn't hook me though I could tell the author was trying to make it very action packed. But I didn't like the main character and I didn't sympathise with her at all, nor the persona she's built around as herself, which makes her seem too good to be real.

The world itself confused me. I'm still not sure what this is—urban fantasy? Just fantasy? I know London is mentioned but there also seem to be fictional places mentioned, and magic, clearly, but I thought it was weird it wasn't really specified... it might've been too early, but oh well.

The writing isn't anything special. It failed to hook me, but that's just me—I'm too picky about writing. It's not bad but it's nothing to be impressed with.

I was also told, rather after I began reading, that this was basically a white-washed retelling of Aladdin. That alone just makes me not want to continue.

Overall rating: 2 stars. I wouldn't recommend this and I'm sure you could find something better to read.
