Pride by Ibi Zoboi
standalone novel
publishes September 18, 2018 by Balzer + Bray
goodreads

Pride and Prejudice gets remixed in this smart, funny, gorgeous retelling of the classic, starring all characters of color, from Ibi Zoboi, National Book Award finalist and author of American Street.

Zuri Benitez has pride. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable.

When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding.

But with four wild sisters pulling her in different directions, cute boy Warren vying for her attention, and college applications hovering on the horizon, Zuri fights to find her place in Bushwick’s changing landscape, or lose it all.

In a timely update of Pride and Prejudice, critically acclaimed author Ibi Zoboi skillfully balances cultural identity, class, and gentrification against the heady magic of first love in her vibrant reimagining of this beloved classic.

Our Dark Stars by Audrey Grey & Krystal Wade
standalone novel
publishes March 6, 2018 by Blaze Publishing, LLC
ARC provided by netgalley
goodreads
While she sleeps, the whole universe changes.

Princess Talia Starchaser has it all. Wealth. Status. Adoring citizens. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she’s forced to publicly betray her best friend, a companion mock she’s had since birth, setting events into motion that lead to the destruction of the humans, and the princess floating through space, a remnant of a time when humans ruled over droids.

One hundred years later, half-mock captain Will Perrault and his ragtag crew discover a device floating in space. When a very human Talia emerges from its depths, Will suspects she’s the key to buying his way back into the regiment he once commanded against the last remaining rebel humans—and the ruling mock queen’s good graces.

Both Talia and Will would rather get space-tossed than trust one another, but with the queen’s forces chasing them across the galaxy and the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance, they’ll forge the unlikeliest of alliances to survive.

♫ ♫ ♫ ♪

I’m a bit surprised by this book. Admittedly, I went into it for a quick read… but I wasn’t really expecting anything. I liked the aesthetic of the cover and the synopsis, so I was a bit optimistic. And then I was surprised because wow, this book was so much more than I’d expected it to be!

This is told from two points of view, and for the first few chapters, they’re a hundred years apart. Circumstances lead to the main characters meeting eventually and it is as wild as you’d expect it. I think my favourite part of this book was the dynamics between humans and mocks. Mocks are sort of like robot companions (don’t quote me on this)? In Talia’s age (which was a 100 years before the story currently takes place in), mocks were beneath humans. A century later, in Will’s time, it’s humans that are seen as lesser and mocks that are at the top of the hierarchy. The changes that led to this were fascinating to me! It was unlike other scifi novels I’ve read before and it made Our Dark Stars stand out.

I really liked the ragtag crew in Will’s ship. I didn’t care for Will all that much—frankly, Talia’s chapters were much more interesting—but by the end, I was rooting for both of them and their impossible mission. They—not just the main characters, but everyone on board—had unique dynamics and I enjoyed seeing that through both Will and Talia’s perspectives.

My only complaint is that they mentioned the auburn of Talia's hair a lot. Too many times. I don't really care about her hair.

Overall, I would recommend this! It’s not overly heavy on romance—there are hints of it but it’s more build up than anything—an intriguing dynamic in the world, and fun characters!

Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody
The Shadow Game, book 1
publishes April 10, 2018 by Harlequin Teen
ARC provided by the edelweiss
goodreads
Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets… and secrets hide in every shadow.

Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn't have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne's offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.

Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi's enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…

And she’ll need to play.

Ace of Shades had a lot going for it. With brilliant writing, amazing and complex main characters, and an intricate plot, it lived up to every single expectation I had for it. But the best part of this novel?

Hands down, the female heroine, Enne Salta. You can’t help but root for this girl, who starts off the novel as a prim and put together lady. But the more time she spends in New Reynes, the more that part of her persona is chipped away. She becomes more in this book, if that makes sense. She just grows into this amazing character that I adored and respected so, so much. Foody made her a flawed and incredibly real character and I simply loved her development. She’s admirable in every sense of the word.

The world Ace of Shades is set in is grimy and dark. It’s also very wonderful because I could actually picture how New Reynes would be like, so that really says about the type of atmosphere Foody wrote and her ability to write it. It’s so clear that she’s passionate about this book because you can just feel it coming from the book! I loved that a lot about Ace and it’s one of the reasons it kept me hooked throughout.

The whole magic system, I admit, confused me a bit. I thought it was new and unique, though, definitely, but if you asked me to explain it, I’d laugh awkwardly because I really, really cannot explain it. Still!! I really appreciated the way Foody created this system! It’s so unlike anything I’ve seen and I loved the overall presence of magic in this book.

I adored the ship and I also adored how it was all very lowkey (even though that made things angsty and me constantly going, WHEN WILL YOU TWO ADMIT YOU LIKE EACH OTHER ALREADY. Constantly, I tell you). I don’t want to say any more on this aspect because it’s reaaaally something you ought to experience for yourself, but lemme tell you: Levi and Enne are a great ship and I foresee a lot of Angst (because this is never just easy) and I love them.

Overall!!! If there’s one fantasy you read this year, let it be Ace of Shades. Paired with amazing narrators, this sophomore novel by Amanda Foody won’t disappoint. It’s got great characters, compelling writing, and the promise of so much more to come. 4 stars and highly recommended!

Nothing Left to Burn by Heather Ezell
standalone novel
publishes March 13, 2018 by Razorbill
ARC provided by the publisher
goodreads
The autumn morning after sixteen-year-old Audrey Harper loses her virginity, she wakes to a loud, persistent knocking at her front door. Waiting for her are two firemen, there to let her know that the moment she's been dreading has arrived: the enormous wildfire sweeping through Orange County, California, is now dangerously close to her idyllic gated community of Coto de Caza, and it's time to evacuate.

Over the course of the next twenty-four hours, as Audrey wrestles with the possibility of losing her family home, she also recalls her early, easy summer days with Brooks, the charming, passionate, but troubled volunteer firefighter who enchants Audrey—and who is just as enthralled by her. But as secrets from Brooks's dark past come to light, Audrey can't help but wonder if there's danger in the pull she feels—both toward this boy, and toward the fire burning in the distance.

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

At the time I'm writing this review, it's 11:00 PM on a Wednesday night.

I've spent the entire day reading this book. I'm going to spend the entire night thinking about this book and how it made me feel, how it's making me feel.

As a general rule, I try to stay away from contemporaries that don't have a happy ending, or something like that. Gritty novels make me feel things and I don't really like the feelings I get.

I classify this as a gritty novel. Which. Which isn't a bad thing. Nothing Left to Burn isn't a bad book—far, far from it. But it's a complicated book and I can't even begin to express everything I want to for it.

I guess I can start with this: I really, really liked it. And I really, really didn't expect how it would affect me.

The story itself is almost on two separate, yet intertwined, timelines. The now takes place in a single day, while the then takes place from the moment Audrey met Brooks, and the start of their relationship. It's told like this: the time, now, and something about the past, something that evolves over the course of the book, until you understand everything about Audrey and Brooks and their complicated, messy relationship.

I had a feeling this book would leave me sad from the start. I kept on with it because wow. I loved Audrey. I loved everything about her that it's hard to explain just why, but it's like I got her and I saw parts of me in her. Her voice, her entire character jumped out to me the entire time and it's definitely part of the reason why Nothing Left to Burn was hard to put down. Audrey is a flawed character and it makes her all the more real. The whole time, the whole book, I wanted her to be free. I wanted her to just be free.

I... I hated Brooks. Also from the start. Their entire relationship had me uneasy and that didn't go away while I kept on reading. I thought he was manipulative and it hurt me whenever Audrey thought she had to, like, not make it up to him or something after saying or doing the wrong thing, but feeling like she should be sorry for everything she needed to understand.

I can't claim to know what it's like to be in an abusive relationship, only through what I've read, so I'm not going to pretend I do. But just reading it, just getting behind Audrey's feelings on their relationship, it was... wow.

I learned a lot about fires and about evacuating from this book. I find it all of it amazing and very horrifying, that threat of having to lose your entire home, all your belongings, in one fell swoop. The urgency, the fear in this book felt so authentic and so real. It's clear Ezell is talented with both writing her characters and her setting!

So. Overall: I just really hope this review made sense. I still feel a little over the place. Nothing Left to Burn comes out soon and it is a spectacular debut. There's just so much packed into it, that I couldn't even begin to process it all. 4 stars and I would highly recommend this!

Happy Tuesday! I'm happy to participate in the blog tour for Amber Hart's latest mystery novel, Wicked Charm, and share my review with you guys today!

{ about the book }

Wicked Charm by Amber Heart

published January 30, 2018 by Entangled: Teen
goodreads
Nothing good comes from living in the Devil's swamp.

Willow Bell thinks moving to the Okefenokee area isn't half bad, but nothing prepares her for what awaits in the shadows of the bog.

Girls are showing up dead in the swamp. And she could be next.

Everyone warns Willow to stay away from Beau Cadwell—the bad boy at the top of their suspect list as the serial killer tormenting the small town.

But beneath his wicked, depthless eyes, there's something else that draws Willow to him.

When yet another girl he knew dies, though, Willow questions whether she can trust her instincts…or if they're leading to her own death.

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•

{ review }

Wicked Charm was an interesting debut for me! I'll admit that I was a bit wary at first, but when the first murder came about, I felt instantly hooked to the story—which is something I didn't think I would ever write but I guess that says something about my tastes, hah.

Anyway, the murders! Look, I'm bad at guessing who the culprit is most of the time. In this book, I kept having to change my mind multiple times. It kept me on my toes and surprised me when the real killer was revealed.

The romance in this book is a bit hot and cold but full of banter. It took some time for me to warm up to Beau and Willow's relationship, but both main characters had sharp wit and constantly traded sassy comments with each other and I enjoyed that immensely!

Charlotte was probably my favourite character and I aspire to be like her. I loved all the scenes she was in and although I wished to see her and Willow develop a friendship during the novel, I still liked their interactions. I found Charlotte to be super complex and intriguing and I loved her development.

The atmosphere really makes the novel here. Hart did an incredible job at truly making you feel like you were in the swamps with the characters (and the gators). Combined with the murder mystery, it was definitely a fun and eerie setting which I liked!

Overall, Wicked Charm was a fun, quick, and intriguing novel! The atmosphere and mystery really made this book for me and I look forward to her other novels!

Helloooo, guys! Today, I'm excited to share my review for Jessi Elliott's upcoming debut, Twisted Gift!

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•

{ about the book }

Twisted Gift by Jessi Elliot
Twisted, book 1
published February 13, 2018
goodreads
Being kidnapped by the leader of the fae really puts a dent in your senior year.

Aurora Marshall is sharp, witty, and always has a plan. Ready to finish her business degree and graduate, her life is going smoothly—until the night she meets Tristan Westbrook.

Tristan, the overbearing, gorgeous fae leader, and an admired businessman in the human world, is all kinds of dangerous. While he finds Aurora intriguing, her refusal to bend to his will keeps them locked in a constant power struggle.

Entering into a deal is the only way to escape Tristan’s clutches, which only plunges Aurora deeper into the fae world. With her future at stake, she is forced to handle his arrogance and extraordinary fae abilities as she fights to stay grounded in her mundane life.

Not to mention her struggle to ignore the growing attraction she knows she shouldn’t feel for the man who kidnapped her.

When people said college would be the most exciting time of her life, Aurora never thought this is what they meant.

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•

{ my review }

Twisted Fate was every bit the fun, fae-filled book I had hoped it would be. I practically flew through the pages and it surprised me in more ways than one.

Elliott's writing is both capitivating and fun. Being inside Aurora's head as she dealt with all the changes around her just inexplicably drew me in. Before, Aurora was just another girl hoping to graduate and get her business degree and get a job afterwards. Now? She has to deal with faeries in her world and with the fact that she's not exactly who she thought she was. Aurora was such a fun narrator! She was levelheaded yet fiesty and I absolutely loved her tenacity and loyalty.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I was a bit surprised when Aurora's family was brought into the book. Not that I'm complaining—I loved the addition of her parents, but especially her brother. Every scene the two had together, I found to be precious and endearing and full of heart.

The faeries in Twisted Fate are truly unlike the others I've read about! I'm so used to faeries in another world, looking unearthly but beautiful. It was different to have them be prominent business people in the modern world, someone others know by prestige and whatnot. I mean, it's not like the general public knows that faeries exist, but the fact that they're able to create and maintain successful businesses was definitely interesting. Plus, I thought the whole business-y part of this book added more to it and Aurora's character—she cared about her future and no matter what, she wasn't going to let anyone ruin it, even if that person was a faerie leader.

Twisted Fate hints at a bigger picture for the faeries. Not too much is given in this first instalment and I think Elliott did a fantastic job of doling out information to readers without overwhelming them. Clearly, there's much more to be known and I can't wait to find out!

I really enjoyed the romance! It played a big role in the book and the two—Aurora and Tristan—are constantly battling for power over the other and the banter is just wonderful. I liked how it played out, and with that ending, I'm even more intrigued to see where it goes in Twisted Gift.

Overall, I really enjoyed Twisted Fate! It was a fun novel and easy to lose yourself in!
