Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd
standalone novel... for now
Publishes October 2, 2018 by HMH Books for Young Readers
e-ARC provided by netgalley
goodreads
Seventeen-year-old Anouk envies the human world, where people known as Pretties lavish themselves in fast cars, high fashion, and have the freedom to fall in love. But Anouk can never have those things, because she is not really human. Enchanted from animal to human girl and forbidden to venture beyond her familiar Parisian prison, Anouk is a Beastie: destined for a life surrounded by dust bunnies and cinders serving Mada Vittora, the evil witch who spelled her into existence. That is, until one day she finds her mistress murdered in a pool of blood—and Anouk is accused of the crime.

Now, the world she always dreamed of is rife with danger. Pursued through Paris by the underground magical society known as the Haute, Anouk and her fellow Beasties only have three days to find the real killer before the spell keeping them human fades away. If they fail, they will lose the only lives they’ve ever known…but if they succeed, they could be more powerful than anyone ever bargained for.

From New York Times bestselling author Megan Shepherd, Grim Lovelies is an epic and glittering YA fantasy. Prepare to be spellbound by the world of Grim Lovelies, where secrets have been long buried, friends can become enemies, and everything—especially humanity—comes at a price.

{ my review }

♫ ♫

CW: kill your gays trope discussion to come.

I… don’t remember much about this novel, and that’s honestly the first problem with Grim Lovelies. While the idea of the book is so cool, the end result leaves a lot to be desired.

I will say this though—I’m excited about where it could go. The ending left me with ideas of where Anouk’s story could go next, who she could be. Most of the novel, I experienced her grow from this innocent little beastie. If I have one weakness, it’s watching those sweet, sheltered characters grow into a hardened soldier.

That being said, there isn’t much else I really liked. I mean, there was the idea of witches in Paris and the whole Pretties and beasties thing. Beasties are basically animals turned human and serve Pretties and witches—I think. (re: I don’t remember much about this book.) I felt there were so many ways this book could go, but for more than half the book, it felt like travelling from point A to point B to point C. There wasn’t much action and it was boring.

I could have done without the romance too. The guy, who is still as irrelevant as he was during my time reading Grim Lovelies, was initially friend-zoned but of course, that boring relationship progressed. Guys, there was no chemistry at all. The book could have done without this. The only thing that made up for it—to me, at least—was the fact that I picked up undertones of interest for another character… the villain. So. This is me hoping.

There’s another thing that made me super uncomfortable too. I’m, like, 98% sure there’s that dreaded bury-your-gays trope. From here on out, there will be spoilers for events occurring near the ending.

Remember what I said about Beasties? How they’re animals turned human? Okay, well, Anouk is one of, like 4 or 5? total in her witch’s household. One of them is gay—and he was described as being the lone wolf, coming off as cruel to the others. He wasn’t always the nicest except to the human boy he was loyal to.

Near the end, the Beasties face a terrible fate: going back to their original form. But most of them are okay—just, uh, held hostage by The Bad Guys. The gay character, though, is the only one that dies. Which makes me, a) sigh for a thousand years and, b) so tired. If this is the type of thing that keeps you from reading a book—and understandably so—steer clear of Grim Lovelies.

With all the pretty Parisian culture and witchy stuff this book had to offer, very little was shown. This book had so much potential! I hold out hope for future sequels, maybe foolishly. I wished this was darker, a bit more action-packed, a little less… dull. Overall, 2 stars.

Song of the Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh
Reign of the Fallen, book 2
publishes January 29, 2019 by Razorbill ISBN
goodreads

The Dead must stay buried.

Karthia is nothing like it used to be. The kingdom's borders are open for the first time in nearly three hundred years, and raising the dead has been outlawed. Odessa is determined to explore the world beyond Karthia's waters, hoping to heal a heart broken in more ways than she can count. But with Meredy joining the ocean voyage, vanquishing her sorrow will be a difficult task.

Despite the daily reminder of the history they share, Odessa and Meredy are fascinated when their journey takes them to a land where the Dead rule the night and dragons roam the streets. Odessa can't help being mesmerized by the new magic--and by the girl at her side. But just as she and Meredy are beginning to explore the new world, a terrifying development in Karthia summons them home at once.

Growing political unrest on top of threats from foreign invaders means Odessa and Meredy are thrust back into the lives they tried to leave behind while specters from their past haunt their tenuous relationship. Gathering a force big enough to ward off enemies seems impossible, until one of Queen Valoria's mages creates a weapon that could make them invincible. As danger continues to mount inside the palace, Odessa fears that without the Dead, even the greatest invention won't be enough to save their fates.

In this enthralling, heartrending sequel to Reign of the Fallen, Odessa faces the fight of her life as the boundaries between the Dead and the living are challenged in a way more gruesome than ever before.

nyello friends! read.sleep.repeat is hosting their 6th annual #ARCAugust and I'm participating again this year!

#ARCAugust is a challenge hosted by the lovely ladies over at read.sleep.repeat! The basics of the challenges are very easy—just read whatever ARCs you've got! It's meant to be an easygoing thing. No twitter chats this year, but they are hosting read-a-thons this year!

Click HERE for more info + their official sign up post!

Okay, so I actually don't expect to read a lot in August, seeing as I expect to be super busy suddenly lol. {In July alone, I've barely have time to read!} Hence that "TBR" up there hah.

I actually had a super ambitious list for this challenge! There are so many books I want to get to but alas. I'm going to keep it short and stress-free, and basically hoping I just have the time to get to them!

Here are the books I hope to read for this year's #ARCAugust!

♩ Song of the Dead by Sarah Glenn Marsh
♩ Give the Dark My Love by Beth Revis
♩ Seafire by Natalie C. Parker

♩ The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
♩ Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popović
♩ The Reckoning of Noah Shaw by Michelle Hodkin

Of course, none of these are set in stone. And these are just a fraction of what I'd listed in my journal lmao.

And these are just books I have now, as of July 16th. More books may or may not be added to this, given my habit of being super impulsive. But, yeah! The 6 books above satisfy my resolution books (backlist, physical, monthly release, .PDF ARC (yeah that's a new one lol)) so really hoping I manage them!

Are you guys participating in #ARCAugust?

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
standalone novel... for now
Publishes November 6, 2018 by Jimmy Patterson Books
ARC provided by ARC club
goodreads
Each year, eight beautiful girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king. It's the highest honor they could hope for... and the most cruel.

But this year, there's a ninth girl. And instead of paper, she's made of fire.

In this lush fantasy, Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most oppressed class in Ikhara. She lives in a remote village with her father, where the decade-old trauma of watching her mother snatched by royal guards still haunts her. Now, the guards are back, and this time it's Lei they're after—the girl whose golden eyes have piqued the king's interest.

Over weeks of training in the opulent but stifling palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills and charm that befit being a king's consort. But Lei isn't content to watch her fate consume her. Instead, she does the unthinkable—she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens the very foundation of Ikhara, and Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide just how far she's willing to go for justice and revenge.

TW: violence and sexual abuse.

•*´¨`*•.¸¸.•*´¨`*•

{ my review }

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

Before I begin this, some trigger/content warnings: animal death, sexual assault/rape, violence, and abuse. There might be more that I missed—I’m so sorry about that—but I believe the finished book will have them printed in page!

The first thing that grabbed my attention about Girls of Paper and Fire—other than that cover—is how gorgeous the writing is without being overly purple prose-y. Ngan’s writing is flawless, both in describing the awful situation Lei is in and creating tension, to descriptions of food, setting, feeling. I was surprised by just how easy it was to fall into this book!

The writing, paired with the main character, Lei, is what kept me hooked the entire time. She—along with seven other girls—are all basically sex slaves to a demon king who only cares about power, in a court where everyone looks down at them for being what they are: courtesans, but also of the paper caste. I felt so much for Lei. Ngan handled her shifting, complex feelings extremely well. The guilt that shocked her when she found herself laughing, maybe even feeling happy in this place; her feelings for another Paper Girl. Lei herself was a very likeable character. Despite her traumas and tragedies, she never lets herself stop fighting in her own way. She never allows herself to be cruel to other people for it. I had so much respect for her!

The romance in GOPAF was amazing. A little slow in the beginning, but the build up was done super well. I loved both Lei and Wren—both characters were super well done—and how the two dealt with their issues, leaned on each other in times of hardship, and y’know, just made the best of what time they had.

There was some cattiness in the book. I hated it, but I felt that. By having other girls who did get along with each other almost made up for it. Blue might’ve been a mean character—even though Ngan added depth to her—but Lei’s friendship with the other girls was a nice change of pace.

And going off that, it was interesting to read about the different viewpoints. Clearly, Lei hated being there as a concubine for the Demon King, but it wasn’t so for all the other girls. It was something that was interesting to read about, how some of the girls were happy to be there, but others clearly had reservations.

My complaint would be the pacing. While well done, it took some time for the story to really get moving after Lei’s initial capturing. I get that a lot of it was for readers—and Lei—to get accustomed to court life, but it also kind of dragged for me.

Overall, I highly recommend this book! It didn’t end the way I expected it to—which was in a clean-cut, story-wrapped-up, kind of way. (I thought it was a standalone and now I will be disappointed if it is.) Anyway, 4 stars and I look forward to Ngan’s next work!

Abomination. Curse. Murderer. All names hurled at eighteen-year-old Seraphina Dovetail. As the seventh-born daughter to a witch, she’s the cause of her mother losing her powers and, in turn, her life.

Abandoned as a child, Sera dreams of becoming an inspector and finding her family. To do that, she must be referred into the Advanced Studies Program at the Aetherium’s Witchling Academy. Her birth order, quick temper, and tendency to set things on fire, however, have left her an outcast with failing marks…and just what Professor Nikolai Barrington is looking for.

The tall, brooding, yet exceedingly handsome young professor makes her a proposition: become his assistant and he’ll give her the referral she needs. Sera is quickly thrust into a world where witches are being kidnapped, bodies are raised from the dead, and someone is burning seventhborns alive. { my review }

♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

I love this book.

I wasn't planning on reading Vampire Academy because I haven't thought about it in a while. But then I read Whirl, which was a blatant copy if I've ever seen—so I thought, why not?

Vampire Academy is better in every way. I mean, yeah, this book definitely has its issues, like many books published in the earlier era of YA. There's slutshaming, girl hate, far too liberal use of words like crazy or psychotic. But what VA did well that Whirl didn't was that Mead made her characters flawed and maybe unlikable at first, but also easy to root for eventually.

You have Rose: a strong, flirty, and caring main character. You see these parts of her throughout the entire book. You especially see how selfless she is for Lissa, how she would do anything for her—small things like standing up to a bully, or threatening to punch Mia. Or bigger things, like sabotaging a budding relationship or betraying one of Lissa's secrets. All of it for her good. (I mean, I do have reservations about this but I do admire it.) What's more is that Rose feels the shame, takes the blame for what her actions cause. I do hate how she hides things from Lissa—since it's for her "protection" and shit (I never buy that), but god. Rose would do anything to protect her, it makes me emo. Run mile after mile, wake up to sore muscles, the whole nine yards to be the best guardian for Lissa. Rose can be easy to hate, but to me, she's so easy to admire.

And I love Lissa too. I love how their relationship has its ups and downs, but they're still such a strong unit. I love their friendship. Rose may be the reckless one, going headfirst into a fight, but Lissa is strong and unique in her own regard. She's as loyal to Rose as Rose is to her—using her powers, despite how much it took a toll on her, to protect Rose from harsh rumors. GIVE ME A MOMENT. I just have so much love for this girl? This soft, gentle, character who would reach out to heal any animal in pain. Who wouldn't hesitate to do what she could do for Rose? Who trusts her without any hesitation? But would also call her out when necessary? I love.

This. This is the type of female friendship we should be seeing in books. Girl hate is such an ancient trope, I need it c a n c e l l e d already. Say what you will about the VA series—I can say Mead did this relationship, this wonderful friendship, right in the first book. (I'll have to see in books 2-6 lmao.)

I'd like to say that while the age gap between Dimitri and Rose make me uncomfy af, at least Dimitri is a good guy. Like, a genuinely good guy. And I'd like to add that Christian Ozera deserves love and I adore him.

There's just. So much to like about this. How the villain came off as. What the villain's motif was. Spoiler alert, I think?—but honestly, this came out over a decade ago and there's a movie, would this really bother anyone lol—but I just love how it wasn't a cliché evil thing, you know? Like. The person is doing it for their own good yeah but wow it is so much deeper than that at the same time? I'm reading too much into it, I think. I didn't expect this reread to impact me so much.

Back to so much to like: the humor! The dialogue! It felt so authentic, so unforced, that it truly made this novel.

Thank you for dealing with me with this review. I'm gonna go be emo about the rest of the series now.
